Habitat for Humanity Choptank Dedicates Home #79

On Saturday, April 27th, family, friends, public officials, and Habitat homebuyers, board, staff, and volunteers gathered on Port Street in Easton, Maryland to dedicate the home of Habitat’s 79th homebuyer, Harry Seldon. Mr. Seldon was presented with the keys to his new home and moved in that day.

“We are blessed to partner with people like Harry,” said JoAnn Hansen, Habitat Choptank’s Executive Director. “Harry worked extremely hard to put in the required 300 hours of “sweat equity,” reduce his debt and save for his closing costs and attend homeownership education classes. To see him presented with the keys to his own home and cut the ribbon on that front door was truly inspirational.”

In attendance to help celebrate the dedication were Mike Arntz, Community Liaison from Congressman Andy Harris’ office; Dean Fisher from the Maryland Energy Administration who provided funding for Habitat Choptank’s energy efficiency and weatherization efforts; and Megan Cook, Ward 4 Councilwoman for the Town of Easton. Also present were community leaders from the Rotary Club of Easton who donated a toolbox to Mr. Seldon; the Oxford Garden Club who provided garden tools and plants; the Habitat Choptank ReStore who presented a gift certificate; Easton Middle School (where Mr. Seldon works) who presented a welcome basket; and the Rev. Daniel Dunlap from Old Trinity Church in Church Creek who performed the dedication and closing prayer, as well as the presentation of a Bible to Mr. Seldon.

Harry Seldon now assumes the full responsibilities of homeownership including repaying his mortgage, maintaining the home, and paying homeowner’s insurance and property taxes. But as Mr. Seldon would tell you, coming with these responsibilities is also the joy and sense of accomplishment that comes from owning a home.

Everyone deserves a place to call home, and Harry Seldon now has just that! Pictured here is the new homeowner after being presented with the keys to his new home by Habitat Choptank’s Construction Supervisor in Easton, Jim Thomas.

About Habitat Choptank Since 1992, Habitat Choptank has made home ownership possible for 79 families and currently partners with 18 local homebuyers. At present, 15 more homes are under construction in Dorchester and Talbot Counties. Income qualifying homebuyers are offered access to affordable mortgage financing in order to purchase a new construction or rehabbed home from the nonprofit’s project inventory.  After completing “sweat equity” hours, attending pre-homeownership classes, and meeting debt reduction and savings goals, these individuals and families will purchase homes that they helped construct and assume the full responsibilities of homeownership including maintaining their home, paying property taxes and repaying their mortgage over 30 to 33 years. Habitat accepts applications for its homeownership program throughout the year.
