While it has been 70 years since the last Claiborne ferry connected Talbot County with the far side of the Chesapeake, the legacy of those days is still with us.  Claiborne’s multiple ferry lines – there were five of them over the decades serving four different destinations – literally put the town on the map. This lecture will describe the history of the Claiborne ferries: how they were generated initially by a political tug-of-war between Baltimore and Philadelphia, how Eastern Shore politicians used their statewide leadership positions to solidify Claiborne’s role, and how the ferry lines were shaped and ultimately made obsolete by technical revolutions in ground transport. It will also illustrate how the evidence of Claiborne’s days as a major ferry and rail hub can still be found all around us — if you know where to look. Lecturer Marty Bollinger is a retired management consultant and amateur historian, now residing in Claiborne. He has always had an interest in naval and maritime history and has published three books and several articles on the subject. Originally formed in Ohio back in the ‘70s (and later adopted in Maryland as “The Beatles of Baltimore”), this beloved progressive rock band is still going strong with their unique balance of artfully experimental and methodically structured rock-n-roll.   Likening Crack the Sky to Steely Dan and the Tubes, Rolling Stone has called the band’s musical output “impeccable”, dubbing founding member John Palumbo’s lead vocals “chameleonlike, resembling Ian Hunter’s and Bowie’s.”

Hummingbird Inn will be celebrating it’s 5th Anniversary on August 6th!   Join Hummingbird as they mark this momentous occasion with an open yard event from from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. There will be a special toast followed by a cake cutting at 5:30 p.m. and then the party continues on from there. The Chandler Travis Philharmonic is a 9-piece ensemble from Boston and Cape Cod that includes a horn section, string bass, keyboard, mandocello, guitar, drums, accordion, and singing valet. According to DownBeat magazine, Roomful of Blues “are in a class by themselves.” With their masterful combination of jumping, horn-heavy, hard-edged blues and R&B, it’s no wonder why the great Count Basie called them “the hottest blues band I ever heard.”   You can find Roomful of Blues performing on Harrison Street between Dover and Goldsborough Streets.  

Chesapeake Music presents the Loston Harris Trio on Saturday, August 13 at 8 p.m. in the Ebenezer Theater in downtown Easton, Maryland. Harris blends traditional jazz riffs, gospel and blues with his own unique stylings. A protégé of Ellis Marsalis, father of the famed Marsalis jazz family, Harris is reminiscent of another Marsalis protégé – Harry Connick, Jr.  Harris was a percussionist during his early studies, switching to piano on the advice of Marsalis. 

Nancy Floyd is a photographic artist and Professor Emerita at Georgia State University. Her project, Weathering Time, consists of nearly four decades of anti-perfectionist self-portraits. “…the photographs show, in fractions of a second, my body standing in an environment (mainly, I’m by myself but sometimes I’m with family and friends) in a straightforward manner for the camera. As time passes, births, deaths, celebrations, and bad days come and go; all the while, the American experience evolves.” Floyd will discuss this long-term project and its greater context, which encompasses the human experience, family ties, American life, and the persistence of time and change. Lectures begin at 6 p.m. and are FREE. Reservations are required.

Join Talbot Historical Society for an hour historic walking tours of beautiful downtown Easton! The first tour starts at 11am The tour guide will take you to various buildings within the historic district of downtown and explain the importance of the buildings in Easton’s history. The second tour starts at 12pm (noon) The tour guide, Mike Olmert, will take you to other historic buildings in downtown Easton and will explain the history of the architecture of those buildings.
