After making multiple albums and performing in far-flung places, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Amy Helm returned home to Woodstock’s Levon Helm Studios just before the pandemic to record “What the Flood Leaves Behind” and reclaim a sense of self. Defying genres while transcending eras and resisting clichés is what Miss Tess is all about. Drawing from jazz, country, blues and old-school rock and roll, she has employed all of her influences and talents on a tour-de-force, while cleverly taking standard perspectives and ideas, like the definition of a love song, to task.   However varied Tess’s music can be, front and center sits her voice that has been described as “alternately seductive and sexy, and a pure joy to listen to” (Pop Matters). Adkins Arboretum, in partnership with the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center, will commemorate the 200th anniversary of Tubman’s birth with the virtual launch of a guided experience, Rooted Wisdom: Nature’s Role in the Underground Railroad, on Fri., March 11 at 7 p.m. The event includes a short documentary film that will premiere via livestream, hosted by the Avalon Foundation and viewable on the project’s website, naturesrole.org. Following the premiere of the 25-minute film, audiences can watch a panel discussion with historians and the filmmakers and participate in a Q&A with the panel. Drew Landry, an LA-based stand-up comedian and writer from Baltimore, started doing comedy when he was 13, and went on tour with Carlos Mencia (Comedy Central’s “Mind Of Mencia”) just two weeks after graduating high school. In addition to his stand-up, Landry writes satirical articles for the popular hip-hop site DJBooth, and has previously written for the college website Total Sorority Move. Recently named one of the official top 50 humor writers on Medium, Landry’s articles on Medium have received a total of over a million views, including his piece “I Have A Theory That Donald Glover and Childish Gambino Are Secretly The Same Person,” which went viral.

Jazz Alive invites you to watch the talented E. Shawn Qaissaunee on March 25th at Easton’s Historic Waterfowl Building! E. Shawn Qaissaunee has been in demand as a multi-instrumentalist and composer for nearly thirty years. Sought out for his talents on guitar, bass, piano and both the rubab and dutar, instruments from his native Afghanistan, Shawn is known for his musical sensitivity, lyricism, and spirited drive to create excitement among listeners and fellow musicians.

The husband-and-wife duo of Sarah and Austin McCombie favors rustic, minimalist acoustic arrangements—mainly clawhammer-style banjo and guitar that showcase deftness and maturity with their songwriting. The duo has a way of connecting with their audiences that is warm and universal.   Their ingenuity during the Covid-19 crisis led to the building of their own venue, The Burrow, and the creation of their mobile concert experience, The Stay at Home Tour which took Chatham Rabbits to 194 neighborhoods in 2020-21. The duo is currently filming a new television show for PBS NC, On the Road with Chatham Rabbits for PBS NC that will premiere in Spring 2022.

Lewis has composed in every tradition that inspires her, including soul, Americana, hip hop, classical, folk, jazz, rock, gospel, blues, soul and R&B. She integrated elements of New Orleans funk while co-writing and co-producing “Mask Up” in the summer of 2020. After carving out space for herself as an African-American lesbian of size, Lewis has also lent her voice to the inclusion and equity in the music industry. And she’s further sharing her message in the music of her eagerly awaited “Americana” album, following 2019’s critically acclaimed “We Belong.” In all things, Lewis does her best to live by the creed she and her ensemble have become known for: Practice Radical Decency.

The mission of the Easton Farmers Market is to provide a marketplace for local farmers and artisans to sustain their local operations, while at the same time offering consumers a venue that fills their plate with local produce. From local produce growers to watermen, from bakers to crafters and local artisans, the Easton Farmers Market provides an entire meal, home decor and unique gift items in a friendly and festive environment. Starting on April 2nd, the market will be Every Saturday from 8 am-1 pm. There will also be Live music at 10:30 am. Masks and social distancing  are highly encouraged for unvaccinated customers.
