The Key to an Inclusive Workplace

Fortune 500 companies and Starbucks share a secret when it comes to inclusive hiring and retention practices. Successful companies know that supporting diversity of all types can create a positive, nurturing environment where all employees feel safe and cared for.
Workforce diversity means creative, out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to new or sticky business dilemmas. Furthermore, people with disabilities who have worked hard in their chosen professions tend to remain on the job, thanks to external supports.
Top tier companies create workforce-inclusive environments by following these steps:
• including people with disabilities in the workforce and considering this population in recruitment campaigns;
• encouraging and advancing those employees;
• providing accessible tools and technologies (many of which are free through local government and non-profit agencies); and
• providing those with disabilities coaches or mentors to support growth.

The Arc Central Chesapeake Region and others can provide these resources for Talbot County employers. Working together, employers and employees can succeed.

Next Month: We show you some local businesses that have stepped up and hired people with disabillities.
