Field Notes February 2020

Chesapeake Harvest would like to welcome Aleya Fraser as the Food safety educator/consultant. Aleya co-founded and ran a natural vegetable farm for the last 5-6 years and was the Program Manager for Future Harvest: CASA.

Under the tutelage of food safety expert, Lindsay Gilmour and Elizabeth Beggins, former Production Manager of Chesapeake Harvest, Aleya has been taking the Food Safety Educator Course, visiting farms, doing mock audits, and risk assessments. “I’ve been a year and a half into the food safety world, but it fits right into what I know about farming.

In her role for Chesapeake Harvest, Aleya will be putting on workshops and field days for farmers and getting them up to date on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) regulations. By making these processes more practical for farmers, she hopes to show how it will increase their bottom line and efficiency.

Aleya will be holding a workshop on composting and how it fits into food safety regulation. It will take place at the beginning of June at the Potomac Vegetable Farm. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
