SUMMARY:Travelers: A Book Talk with Helon Habila & Matthew Davis
DESCRIPTION:Join Nigerian-born author Helon Habila and Matthew Davis\, Director of the George Mason University Alan Cheuse International Writers Center (ACIWC)\, for a conversation about Habila’s latest book Travelers. Travelers focuses on a Nigerian scholar who travels to Berlin with his American wife for a fellowship that entails creating a portrait series of African migrants. In a quest to document “real migrants\,” the book instead uncovers a multiplicity of narratives that make up the African diaspora. \n  \nA spotlight tour of contemporary artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s self-portrait in the Museum’s Fickle Mirror exhibition will follow the talk. Born in Nigeria and relocating to the United States as a teenager\, Crosby creates work that addresses the complexities of culture clash and belonging through imagery referencing her dual Nigerian and American backgrounds. \n  \nReservations are required

DESCRIPTION:Aerial Photographer Hunter H. Harris\, using a dual projection system\, will present a series of dramatic oblique aerial photographs showing changes in the local landscape over the past 75 years. The exhibit is on loan from the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and presents mid 1900s aerial photographs of the Chesapeake Bay by photographer H. Robins Hollyday and compares them with aerial photographic images of the exact same locations taken by our presenter\, Hunter Harris. \n  \nReservations are required and the cost is. FREE for THS members and $5 for non-members.
